Life Skills
8 workshopsThese workshops are very hands-on. They focus on practical skills that are useful to just about everyone. Each is taught with the goal of learning to live more sustainably.
Start your sustainability journey with an edible garden! We'll cover planning your garden layout, sowing seeds, planting starts, weed and pest management, and choosing from a variety of organic growing methods. Leave with a potted seed or start.
Learn to choose groceries and prepare meals in ways that make a positive difference for your community and the environment. Participants prepare a locally-sourced meal to eat together as the culmination of the workshop. Menus vary according to the dietary needs of the group and seasonal availability.
While prepping months worth of meals for our Appalachian Trail thru-hike, we learned a ton! Learn to dehydrate snacks or complete meals using (almost) anything from your fridge or pantry. Participants get to taste a variety of samples.
Not sure what to do with your kitchen scraps? Make your own fertilizer! Whether you live in a city apartment, the suburbs, or the country, there's a composting method that will work for you. Learn general guidelines for what you can compost, keeping it from getting smelly, and how best to do it in your own living situation.
Build community while building campfires, and learn to safely cook over an open fire.
Learn to tie knots commonly used in daily life and a few specialized scenarios including gardening, camping, and hammocking.
Prepare for an overnight hike including choosing camping gear, assembling your pack, planning meals, planning a route, and mentally & physically adapting to the trail.
Take a walk through the woods and learn about what lives here — the furry, the feathered, the slimy, and the photosynthetic. Choose from a daytime or night hike.
Personal Sustainability
4 workshopsThese workshops focus on common decisions in our personal lives: what to buy, what to wear, how to take care of ourselves, what to throw away, and how to use our utilities like water and electricity. Learn to make each of these decisions more sustainably.
Identify the most common sources of plastic in your life, make a plan for using alternatives, and learn ways to upcycle or recycle the plastic that inevitably does find its way into your home or workplace.
Look, feel, and smell great with bath and beauty products that are healthy for both you and the environment. Learn to identify sustainable sources for these products and make a few of your own. Leave with a homemade hair, skin, or hygiene product.
Learn the basics of one or more textile-related skill (sewing, crochet, mending, natural dying). Trace the origins of your own wardrobe and discover ways to fill your closet that are environmentally and socially conscious.
Deepen your understanding of these three major players in local and global sustainability. Develop strategies for reducing consumption in your home and/or workplace.
Sustainability for Leaders
3 workshopsThese workshops are designed for people who lead others and make decisions for their workplaces, social groups, teams, households, or other organizations — or aspire to.
Decisions are the point at which we transform knowledge into action. Learn to recognize 3 common approaches to decision-making and begin a life-long practice of choosing with the greatest good in mind — for people, prosperity, and the planet.
At Tenderfoot, we believe sustainability is relevant to every household, community, and career field. Whether you're new to the workforce or a seasoned professional, explore how you can use your work time to contribute to a better world.
While none of us is individually responsible for causing climate change, all of us can be part of the solution. In this workshop, we discuss the causes and effects of climate change, and you'll develop an individualized climate action plan, tailored to your own lifestyle or organization. Your plan includes steps in three categories: reducing emissions, sequestering carbon, and building resilience.
